2011 Advent Calendar

I just finished up our 2011 Advent Calendar. I got a little behind so I started with day 5, leaving 20 paper stockings to be made, stuffed, and hung. I didn't need to buy any additional craft supplies due to my overwhelming supply of cardstock and thickers! I printed a stocking outline on each piece of cardstock, cut it out, stapled 2 stockings together (leaving the top open). I then stuffed each one. Most have candy, some have art or baking projects for us to complete that day. Others have coloring or puzzle pages. All have a verse inside. After filling each one, I glued the tops on and then carefully "hung" each on our mantle a large piece of tape (hoping that it will hold). The kids already opened their first one and seem pretty excited about the rest!

Honestly, it seems like I just made this post for 2009! I do not know where this last year went! But it came and went with many "firsts" - new baby, new home, kindergarten, san diego, etc. In any case, here we go, my top ten!

Long lost layout - love of my {scrapbook} life

Way back at the end of 2009, I applied for a DT spot that I didn't get. This layout was one of my entries. At the time I didn't want to post it on my blog in case it needed to be a new and original layout for the call. In any case, here it is. I put a lot time into this one, it is probably my most prized layout of all time (yes, I love it that much). Partly because of the effort I put into, partly because of the color scheme - kraft, red, navy, and teal, and partly because the photo is so cute and matches perfectly. I'm in love!!

Added pearls to the coordinating rub-ons. Stitched the premade tag and along the diecut paper.

Swiped the corrugated letters with acrylic paint.

Tied some jute around arrow. Heavily distressed and inked the patterned paper.

Swiped the rhinestone swirl with white paint. Added distress stickles to the letters on the tag.

TTT January reveals

If you don't know much about TTT kits, I'll give you a little summary: kit #1 is mostly for girls, kit #2 for boys, and kit #3 is for both or seasonal. All kits come with several pieces of patterned paper, 5 pieces of cardstock, an alphabet and several embellishments! Tune into the TTT blog tomorrow for February's kit reveals!

So for January I got to work with kit #3 which featured the Hoopla line by Glitz. It was a great color scheme with bright teals and greens. Some of the paper and embellishments were specifically for birthdays but I didn't have any birthday pictures so I found that it also went well with some of my snow pictures and even some of summer pictures! I loved all the great extras too including Kaiser craft rubons, bling, and Making Memories looking glass embellishments.

A few things Christmas

I did quite a few projects for the holidays this year. Some of them I got pictures of and some I didn't. I made some fun candy cane riendeers out of yarn and googly eyes and then I forgot to put them in the kids stockings! I also tried to make these glass ornaments like I saw Tim Holtz do with alcohol inks. I wasn't so happy the way they turned out though, his looked much better!

I also made a few sets of cards with some stamps that I bought at Rubber Soul, who just went out of business last week - so sad :( Here is one of the sets:

I also made an 8x8 Christmas-themed album with some of the leftover paper and embellishments that I got from the cruise. I made it very simple, intending it for someone who probably doesn't scrapbook. I didn't sell it at the craft fair so I guess I'll save it for next year.

Cruise projects part 2

Wow, moving really puts a damper on my free time! Here most of the rest of my cruise projects. There are a few pages that needed some touch-ups and those haven't been scanned yet. And then there were the 20+ cards, a mini-album and a 12x12 canvas. Some of the cards I've already sold but maybe I'll upload the rest when I get a chance. All I can say is, I hope to do a scrapping cruise again someday!!!

I seriously can't believe I haven't posted in almost 2 months! It's not for lack of crafting, that's for sure! I made about 40 pages on the cruise along with a mini-album, canvas, and a bunch of cards. I will post those pages very soon. As soon as I got back from the cruise, I had less than 3 weeks to get ready for the craft fair that was yesterday. I had a ton of inventory this year, 100+ cards, tags, mini-albums, 8x8 albums, banners and other home decor items. I didn't have time to take pictures of everything beforehand, but I think I may list my leftover items on etsy. So, to tide you over until I get to some of that, here are the remainder of my Let's Scrap layouts that I did for the design team (my term ended in Oct). Secondly, I'd like to share a card I made this week, with some tips on how to re-create it. Here is the card:

First off, create the base of the card as desired with cardstock and patterned paper. To make the "happy birthday" circle text in Microsoft word, you'll need to go to Insert->Word Art. Select a style for the words (I selected style 2 - you can change the shape later), then you'll need to write your sentiment and choose the font and the font size. Remember to repeat the sentiment multiple times without pressing RETURN (I did 5 five times). My font size was about 18 pt, but customize it as you choose. Press okay when done. Then go up to WordArt Format options and select Change Shape, select Circle. Now adjust the size of the circle by either dragging the bounding box or by manually entering the size, about 3.5"x3.5" for this card. Now print out onto cardstock and cut out with a circle cutter or scissors. Layer with other circles and scalloped circles. Add stitching if desired. Find some patterned paper with candles and cutout (mine is Scenic Route). Adhere with pop-dots, embellish with rhinestones, ribbon and a brad. And there you have it, a unique card for someone special!

Finally, I just got word that one of my layouts was selected for the SNR(Scrapbook News&Review) online magazine. The issue will be coming out June 20th on their website. Woo-hoo!

Holiday journal '09

Remember the December daily album that Ali Edwards does during the holiday season? I loved her idea but took a slightly different approach. Instead of making a page each day in December, I simply kept a journal (on the computer) about what we did each day. Some days had pictures to go with them, and others didn't! So I've been thinking about how I wanted to make the album, when recently on the Pink Paislee blog, one of the designers posted a bunch of sketches for a mini-book. And that is what mine is loosely based on. I used mostly BoBunny papers, lots of various embellishments, distress stickles, and tons of Elle's studio's tags and journaling cards. Enjoy!

I am so late in posting all these, but a new baby is a good excuse. I haven't actually scrapped at all since the baby has been born, but I'm joining the newest GotSketch online course which starts next Monday. Hopefully that will get me motivated!

First off are some Valentine's cards that I made. I gave one to my honey and 2 to our oldest 2 kids. Jamie is just learning how to read and can understand short simple words so inside his card I wrote "MOM AND DAD LOVE JAMIE" and he was tickled pink. I wrote the same thing for Abby with her name so that Jamie could read it for her. Then they pulled off all the embellishments as if they were some sort of prize that you took from the cards...o-well!

Next are the first 4 completed sketches from GotSketch 104. I'm using these sketches to complete pages from our sailboat trip this last summer.

top 12 of 2009

Well, I couldn't quite narrow it down to 10, so I'm doing my top 12 layouts, plus a card and altered item. Here they are, and why I picked them:

1. our home - love how the collage turned out and such a cute picture of our little home too

2. sweet child of mine - love the mix of colors on this and the comparison of me & abby

3. my lil turkeys - I love the blue and yellow "happiness" of this page and all the textures it has (IRL the yellow background is felted, the blue background is embossed and all the embellies add texture too), plus this is one of my favorite pictures and reminds me of good times in San Diego.

4. You&Me friends - this was a quick scraplift from Nathalie at TTT and I love how it turned out with the birdies punched from PP and such a sweet photo of mom&abby.

5. (talk) to the hand - these photos just typify the attitude of these 2 cousins, I also love this layout because I used my staz-on ink to tarnish some of the metal accents I had on this page, a first for me!

6. jabber mouth - because she IS such a jabber mouth, and I love the mix of embellishments on this page without it feeling overwhelmed.

7. Lil helpers - I like the non-traditional mix of colors for this holiday layout and I just like the overall design too, which was a sketch off the gotsketch blog.

8. paddle boat - love how my title turned out and also how can you not love all those bright bold colors in both the photos and the basic grey papers?

9. lollipop - I loved these pictures of the kids at the parade I took them to, and I also loved these October Afternoon Cherry Hill papers!

10. 4500 yrs ago - I really like how this page came together as I only scraps left of my travel line (and notice the stamping I did on chipboard? I love it when I'm not a lazy scrapper!), it also marked the very last page in my London album so I was very happy about that!

11. County fair - Nothing too fancy about this page except that I loved this sketch from pagemaps and of course the fair-themed papers went perfectly with my photos. I also love the coredinations white cardstock which you could sand to reveal the inner color core - very cool!

12. frosty - It's not often that I do a page of me so I had to pick at least one! This page has a lot of little details that I was very happy about in the end, including the distress stickles that I put on the chipboard letters.

Halloween album - even though this was a complete scraplift from my sister, I had so much fun making it that I got all the supplies to do a Christmas one too. Now to just put some pictures in it!

Smile card - I used my Cosmo Cricket Girl Friday leftovers to make a bunch of cards and this was my favorite, their journaling cards make great sentiments!

Actually the thing I altered was technically a 7gypies mini purse with an accordion album inside it. But I cut apart the album, making each page a separate recipe. Everything was done with cosmo cricket's early bird papers. Not all recipes are shown, just a sampling here.

This is the advent calender that we ended up keeping. I used some elle's studio number tags to and glued a magnet to the back of each one. The numbers aren't on in order so the kids have had fun finding the right number each day and placing it on the fridge. This one was very basic and didn't take me long to do.

Here's a $1 frame I altered from Michaels, these make for quick handmade gifts!

A few more Tim Holtz style tags. The chipboard ornaments have been painted with crackle paint and then dyed with alcohol inks - lots of fun!

Tim Holtz tags

I love following along with Tim's 12 tags of Christmas each year. I usually pick one that I really like and try to get everything to make several of them. This year I was especially drawn to tag #3 (you can find Tim's tutorial here). It consisted of making your own plaid pattern on glossy cardstock with various colors of alcohol inks. After that was done, you stamped your desired images in black ink, added some snow "flurries" if desired with acrylic paint, put your design onto a distressed tag, then wrapped it in jute twine and attached a word token with a trinket pin. These were very fun to do once I got the hang of it. Each tag adorned a plate of cookies that I delivered to friends this year. Enjoy if you were one of the lucky ones!

All you need to make these are some foam cones, pegs, paper, pearlized pins, chipboard stars, and wire. You push the peg into the cone and then I used a painted block of wood with a hole Chad had drilled for me. Although you could also use a small pot filled with marbles or something to hold the tree in place. My first tree had pretty thin strips but then I realized I could do them faster if I cut the strips a bit wider (and it used less pins too). I topped the trees with some decorated chipboard stars, using some wire to stick it into the foam. Finally I spritzed the trees with some shimmerz spray.

I read about this project on the pink paislee blog last year and decided to give it a try. It was a lot of fun (although very time-consuming). I really like the way it turned out - so pretty! I'm making another one in a slightly different color scheme for someone that "ordered" it from me at the craft fair - hopefully the second time around will go a bit faster!

Abby's scrapbook

It is Abby's 3rd birthday party tonight so I decided to make her a little scrapbook of her own, since she loves to sit and pretend that she is scrapping with me. It was my second attempt at using my Bind-it-all machine, and although it was better than my first attempt, I still have some things to learn. The hardest part is squeezing the wires together without them warping. So any tips, I would love to hear them!

On a side note, I would also love to hear any ideas on taking pictures of your projects without distractions in the background. I'm thinking of having DH build me a 3-sided white box. Taking things outside is usually not feasible here in the winter.

I had a lot of fun with this project. I learned how to make these flowers over at the Cosmo Cricket blog, they used them to make a bouquet, but I just stuck a wooden stick in each flower before rolling it up. I altered an old paint can with paper, paint, letters and ribbon, then filled the can with some sea glass (marbles would work too) and inserted my completed flowers.

This will be for sale at the craft fair, but if it doesn't sell, I'll be happy to display it in my window sill!

Creepy crawly crop layouts

Last weekend I participated in a crop over at TTT. I did all the challenges and all the games and won 3 times (woo-hoo!). I'm just so glad I got a ton of stuff done. I had a lot of random pictures that I was starting to get bored of. Most of these pages are a bit under-embellished but I was trying to work fast and simple and get some stuff used up (hey, convention is next month and I have to make room for more stuff- LOL!).

I can't believe it's been over a month since I last posted! Well, needless to say, September was a very busy month for me. We went camping, we had the 20-week ultrasound (it's a boy!), I visited my sister and nieces in Texas, and Chad went on a 2-week business trip.

The good news is that I did make a few things. I have a few more things that need to be scanned in and I'll be spending the next 3 weeks making crafts (mostly cards) for an upcoming holiday craft fair. So stay-tuned for that!

A mini-book I made to document Abby's birthdays, from age 1-7, all the pages are embellished so I just pop in a picture each year as she grows:

And last quarter I was the art teacher during Sunday school at our church. Well, I had a lot of leftover supplies including some blank magnetic business cards, so I covered them with paper, cut them out like fish and numbered them. I also made a card to match each fish with some leftover chipboard and pulled out a magnetic fishing pole we had from another toy. With that I invented the fishing memory game (it's like memory put you "fish" for your match).

Distress Stickles Challenge

The winner of this challenge will receive a RAK from me - 3 new bottles of Distress Stickles in the following colors: Fired Brick (red), Scattered Straw (yellow), and Spiced Marmalade (Orange).

Your challenge is to make a scrapbook page with at least one item completely covered in Distress Stickles. Don't have any? Shop for some here at the Scrap Attack Scrapbooking store.

You can cover whatever you want, just make sure it is completely covered. Some ideas are chipboard, die-cuts, alphas, a large pattern on your paper, etc. Here are some tips to help you out:

1. If you are covering raw or white chipboard, ink it with a coordination color first, as Distress Stickles leave a translucent finish.
2. For the same reason, if you are covering an area that is already colored, choose a similar color of Distress Stickles.
3. Use a liberal amount and don't be afraid of using too much, too light of coverage will result in very little texture.
4. Distress Stickles take a LONG time to dry, they are very watery and will not look good until completely dried. Best to leave it overnight.
5. For a little boost, you can use your heat gun to help it dry, but be careful of warping your project.

Examples:
1. Here I inked some raw chipboard with orange chalk ink, then covered in Spiced Marmalade stickles.

2. Here I used a BG sticker die-cut that was already colored (blue, red, and yellow for the different words), and then covered each section with coordinating colors.

Design team call at {SAS}

I just wanted to let everyone know that there is a design team call going on at Scrap Attack Scrapbooking right now. You can find the full details here at this blog post. The deadline is June 30th, 2009.

My term on the design team started back in November of last year. I was so elated when I found out that I had made the team! Lauri immediately sent me a kit filled with new product and goodies. Every month I got something new and exciting. Some months were a cinch for me and I made up to 8 layouts, others stretched my abilities and made me think outside of my "comfort zone", but I am still grateful for those opportunities to try different items and techniques that I wouldn't have normally. I love that being on an online team means that you make layouts for yourself, that you keep for your own albums. All you need to submit back is a picture of your finished product - it's that easy!

I've had a wonderful time on the DT at {SAS} and I cannot say enough good things about the message board, the store, and the owner, Lauri. I even had the pleasure of meeting her face to face when I went to the retreat in Portland, she was so nice to hand-deliver our online order right to us in the hotel!

This was my first time ever being on a design team, but hopefully it will not be my last. I've been asked to reapply for my position, but I'm choosing not to for personal reasons. Basically, my life is too overwhelming for me at the moment, and I need to scale back on some of my commitents. I don't plan on being absent from the all the excitement going on {SAS}, but I will take a break on the sidelines for awhile. I encourage anyone who may be thinking about it to try out, you certainly won't regret it!

This is my latest example for the Croppy Cat challenges at Scrap Attack Scrapbooking, head on over there and check it out! I love this page because the picture so accurately describes how Jamie was imitating those Bird of Paradise flowers. He'd grab it by the head and in his silliest voice say "I'm a bird and I live around bushes!". He made it up all himself, what a goofball.

I've been trying to get caught up on my Ad Challenges so that I get my charm, here are 2 that I did last week:

Jamie's 3rd birthday party, blowing out his candles. I just got around to this because these pictures I had to get from Grandpa neigh-neigh first. I love this GotSketch Express sketch, I've already used it several times. I also love the distress stickles that I liberally applied to the "Happy Birth Day" sticker die-cut, it turned out looking really cool ( I also applied it to some of the other die-cuts too).

Jamie's class photo for his preschool class this last year. The name of the school is also written on the photo but I took it out in photoshop for the purposes of posting on the internet. I used most my OA scraps for this page.
And this was the last rounds sketch challenge (*don't laugh at the picture!). Chad took a picture of me exercising one morning and I thought it would be good to document what I do at least 4-5 days a week. This will go in my BOM album. I used scraps from an old PS kit (I think May 08), with some Chatterbox and Pink Paisley die-cut papers.

And here is a mini-book that I made for my mom for Mother's Day, I used another old PS kit to for the patterned paper on this one (old Sassafrass Lass). Each page is about something I learned from my mom and the opening page is about how much I understand now that I'm a mom myself.

Last weekend, I went to a crop with Bridget. Since my computer was down that day I didn't have the chance to print out any challenges or contests and so you know what I did? I made pages just for fun! (Can you believe that?) It felt so good to just do pages for me and got me to remember why it is that I scrapbook in the first place - for a creative outlet. I scraplifted a few pages out of a magazine, which I haven't done in forever, and I did a GotSketch layout - those always turn out great! So without further ado, here they are...

This month at Scrap Attack Scrapbooking, I got to work with the Old Fashioned Courtship line from Marks Paper Company. This was the first time I've ever used their paper, it has a great woven look to it and is nice and thick, and double-sided too! I also got to use a lot of Scenic Route Sonoma papers and embellishments because they matched so nicely. Enjoy!
